Ich wohnte dem Russischen Ball am 23. Jänner in der Hofburg bei. Dies war das erste Mal, dass er dort stattfand, nachdem er das letzte Jahr noch im Kursalon untergebracht war. Obwohl die Zeit und der Aufwand, die in die Planung des Balles flossen offensichtlich waren, ist der Ball noch nicht bereit für die Hofburg, da er einfach nicht den Saal ausfüllen konnte; der Festsaal, der als einziger Saal verwendet wurde, wirkte fast leer. 

Der Ball selbst erinnerte mich mehr an ein Dinner-Theater. vor allem, da bis 1 Uhr früh durchgehend ein Unterhaltungsprogramm lief und gerade ein einziges Paar Walzer tanzte bis dahin.

Das Mariinsky-Orchester unter der Leitung von Maestro Gergiev war beeindruckend und die Qualität der Einlagen, von der Opernsängerin bis zum Walzer-Ballett, war wirklich hoch. Das Essen war äußerst exquisit, von den Vorspeisen (ein wirklich außergewöhnlich köstlich zubereiteter Hecht) bis zu den Hauptspeisen! Und die Ballveranstalter waren vor allem sehr großzügig zu mir, wofür ich mich bedankte. Ich bereute sehr, bereits zuvor zu Abend gegessen zu haben.

Es gab auch eine Auktion von sechs Gegenständen, darunter eine Ikone, das Opernballkleid von Lotte Tobisch sowie zwei Ballkarten. Der Erlös wurde zur Förderung junger Künstler und Senioren in Österreich und Russland verwendet, ein Teil kam den Künstlerheim in Baden-Baden zugute. Die Preise der Auktion stiegen dabei in schwindelerregenden Höhen, bis zu einigen Tausend Euros.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass der Ball gut organisiert war und die Qualität von allem, sei es vom Essen oder dem Unterhaltungsprogramm, sehr hoch war, jedoch nicht die Besucheranzahl für den Veranstaltungsort hatte. Das Konzept, eine exklusive Ballveranstaltung zu bieten, ohne eine überfüllte Tanzfläche ist ein gutes, jedoch wären mehr Pausen zwischen den Vorführungen und damit mehr Zeit zum Tanzen dem Thema "Ball" entsprechender gewesen. Es wurde nämlich kaum getanzt, außer am Schluss zwischen 1 und 2 Uhr. Obwohl derzeit noch zu unausgereift, hat er noch das Potential, zu einem großen Hofburg-Ball heranzureifen. Ich wünsche ihm Glück dabei!

I attended the Russicher Ball in the Hofburg on Wednesday, Jan 23.  This was it's first time in the Hofburg, having come from the Kursalon in the prior year.  While the amount of time and detail that went into the planning of the ball is quite evident, this ball is not yet ready for the Hofburg because it doesn't have the people count for it - the great hall of the Hofburg seemed almost empty (it was the only one being used for the ball).

The ball itself was to my mind more of a dinner theater, with only one couple doing a single waltz before 1am.
Until then, the entertainment ran almost continuously.

The full orchestra was impressive, and the quality of the entertainers, from opera singers to ballet waltzers was quite high.  The food was superb, from the appetizers (such as an extremely well prepared hecht) through to the main course!  And the ball organizers were particularly generous towards me, which I appreciate. Made me regret having had dinner before the ball.

The prices the auction went up to were eyebrow raising (several thousand euros).  There were also several items outside the main hall, reflecting the sponsors of the ball. 

In conclusion, while the ball was well organized and the quality of everything from the food to the entertainment was quite high, it did not have the people count for the venue, and there was no dancing except at the end between1 and 2 am.  Though currently premature, the ball may yet grow up to be a proper Hofburg Ball, and I wish it well.
